Kona Coffee is supposedly one of the premium coffees around the world.

Kona coffee is produced on the slopes of Mount Hualalai and Mauna Loa in the north and south kona districts of the islands of Hawaii. That is why it is known as “Kona”.

Coffee can be grown in only specific number of locations around the world because it requires specific mixture of soil, sun and water. The favorable conditions which kona requires for growing are bright sunny morning, humid rainy afternoons and mild nights. Pure kona coffee is believed to be one of the premium specialty coffees around the world. The pure kona coffee is cultivated only in the north and south of kona on the big island of Hawaii.

After cultivation, kona coffee is selected, pulped, dehydrated and hulled and then graded. With the help of machinery, beans are sorted into different grades according to their size and shape. Peaberry comes at the highest on this list. When one side of the flower gets joined with the other side leaving only one bean in the coffee cherry then peaberry bean is produced. It provides it a more intense flavor. It makes nearly 10 to 15% of the whole kona coffee. Kona coffee is graded as extra fancy, fancy and prime.

Kona coffee is dehydrated, and then roasting depends on the results and difference in the moisture content of the beans. A good roasting process can make lots of difference in the bean quality. Roasting is referred to as an art form by many people in this business. Dark roast is typically called espresso. Vienna is included in the medium roast category. For the best assimilation of the added flavor they are either sprayed or powdered instantly after roasting. As soon as the roasting finishes oxidation process begins and coffee is at its freshest.

Kona coffee comes in vacuumed containers and freezing coffee will optimize freshness. The self life of a whole bean is about 2 months and that of ground coffee is about a month if they are stored by this method.

Verify the sticker to purchase 100% pure kona coffee. Kona blend states that it contains only 10% kona beans. Check out the large farms and coffee mills in kona coffee belt, if you visit the islands of Hawaii.
