Roasting not only gives perfect taste to your coffee but it also adds flavor to it.

Everyone likes coffee. But the process of making coffee from its initial stages is not an easy task. Roasting is one of the most important parts of making coffee. The green beans of coffee when roasted expand themselves about double their original sizes; also change color and solidity. The color of beans changes from green to brown after absorbing the heat.

The basic function of roasting is to add flavor to coffee. The taste of coffee depends on how much we have roasted the beans. If we roast them light then the taste of coffee will be lighter and vise a versa. But normally people prefer that coffee should not be either too dark or too light.

In the 19th century people used to roast coffee in a frying pan. But this technique required more skill to do this work perfectly.  Then the roasting of coffee started commercially.

Process:

The process of coffee roasting is not easy. It includes cleaning, roasting, cooling, grinding and packing. This work is done by machines.  First of all, bags of green beans are opened by machines and then they are put into the hopper machine to remove their seed coats. Then these beans are shifted to roasters. These roasters create the temperature of 350 to 550 °C. These beans are roasted for the time period of 10 to 30 minutes. These roasters have horizontal drums. In these drums green beans are put with the current of combustion gases. These drums are put on direct fire which results in roasting of the green beans.

There are two types of roasters, indirect-fired roasters and direct fire roasters.  Indirect fire roasters are those with burning flames but it does not contact the coffee beans, only combustion gases are responsible for roasting the beans. In direct-flame burner, beans are in contact with burning flame and combustion gases.

After the burning process, water sprays are used for cooling the beans. Then the process of cleaning the roasted beans starts by removing waste particles like stones, metal fragments and other waste particles. Drying comes after this, followed by the grinding process. After grinding, coffee is ready to be enjoyed by its lovers with its great taste.
